GREENWOOD — "I'm pleased that we got here this year, but it's always disappointing to walk out of here one match away from getting medals," stated a disappointed Bellmont wrestling coach Brent Faurote as his Braves were taken out by state rival Evansville Mater Dei in the first round of the final Team State Wrestling Tournament Saturday at Center Grove, 45-21.
The Braves had some big senior performances, such as the sudden scissors' fall from 152-pound Dewey Melcher, a major decision for 145-pounder Brooks Faurote and a vengeful 9-6 win by Bobby Keuneke at 120 pounds, but they were unable to keep the Wildcats from scoring big, yielding five falls.
Mater Dei then was felled 40-19 by Perry Meridian, which dumped Crown Point to win its second straight state crown by a whopping 43-14 tally.
"There's an awful lot of good teams that didn't get here, and we got here 15 of the 17 years. That's a good streak and we kept it alive, and that's something I'm proud of," said Coach Faurote.
"It's hard," said Melcher, whose scissors' hold took the air out of his foe. "We didn't line up with them very well. They're a good team. But it's been a good year for us. The sectional was tough and we could very easily have gotten beat there. In the regional we won two tough matches with Yorktown and Snider, so we were pretty fortunate to get this far. We just wish it could have been a little better ending."
"It's tough right now because these seniors have put a lot of time in. We did a great job to get here, but we know there could have been a couple of more wins out there today. We had some opportunities, but just didn't pounce on them," said Faurote.
