The DDD wants to know
Read One Program promotes literacy
The Decatur Daily Democrat has joined forces with the Van Wert (Ohio) Times-Bulletin and other newspapers in the region to promote the Read One program as part of National Book Month in October.
The Read One program encourages area residents to read at least one book during October. Readers are then encouraged to send the title of the book and the author’s name to J Swygart at email@example.com or to drop them off at the Daily Democrat office. The information will be printed in a Democrat edition in November (reader's names will not be published; we simply want to know who's reading and what they're reading). The goal of the program is to encourage reading by all ages of area residents and to allow the sharing of the names of good books with their neighbors.
The Read One program began in 2011 in Van Wert County and has seen steady community growth in just two years, according to Kirk Dougal, publisher for the Times-Bulletin. The concept started with the idea of stressing the importance of stamping out illiteracy for individuals and the community, it coincided with October being named National Book Month and was designed to bring attention to reading during the month in the hope the focus would remain on reading the rest of the year as well.
