Walter F. Baker

    Walter F. Baker, 97, Decatur, died Wednesday, Jan. 8, 2014, at Adams Memorial Hospital.
    Walter was born Dec. 27, 1916, in Adams County to the late Frank C. and Mary B. (Dorney) Baker.
    He married Kathleen R. Heimann Nov. 24, 1945;she preceded him in death Jan. 29, 2009.
    Walter was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, the Holy Name Society and Knights of Columbus Council 864. He was a farmer and weigh master for Central Soya, retiring in 1976 after 36 years of service. He also served his country in the United States Army during World War II with the 601st Field Artillery Battalion “A” Battery.
    Survivors are his son, Joseph W. (Nona) Baker, of Decatur; four daughters, Mary F. Baker of South Bend, Ann T. (Bob) Kershner of Plymouth, Jean C. Larrabee of Decatur and Ruth E. (Tom) Ahlman of Valparaiso; seven grandchildren and four great- grandchildren.
    A 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, with Father David Voors officiating.
    Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
    He was preceded in death by a daughter, Eileen R. Gardner; and a brother Thomas Baker.
    Reciting of the Holy Rosary will be at 2:30 p.m. Monday followed by visitation from 3-7 p.m. at Haggard-Sefton and Hirschy Funeral Home and 9-10 a.m. Tuesday at the St. Mary’s Parish Hall.
    Memorials are to Father Benedict Kakwezi’s Fund, Child Fund International or Masses.
