Wall may get brick

June 6, 2013

It now appears likely that the "ugly wall" left after the demolition of the longtime building at the corner of Monroe and Second streets in downtown Decatur will be covered by brick.
A comment launched near the end of Tuesday night's city council meeting turned into some hard decisions, the result being the strong probability that a brick wall will eventually cover the eyesore.
It began when Councilman Matt Dyer said he has received several comments, both pro and con, about the images added to the wall in recent days. Decatur native Greg Mendez, one of the prime leaders in the city's sculpture movement, and some friends recently painted several black figures on the wall. It was done in hopes of making the wall look at least a bit more presentable for this Saturday's Sculpture Tour, and with the realization that whatever was done is temporary.
