Visited doc... on horseback

Leslie Fender had a doctor's appointment. Just your routine post-surgery evaluation. But his route, and method, of keeping that appointment have been anything but routine.
Most patients likely would have made the trip from Texas to Royal Oak, Michigan, by plane. Or even by car. Few would have kept that appointment by horseback.
"But what fun would that be?" asked the 54-year-old Fender as he plodded on horseback down a 13th Street sidewalk in Decatur Monday morning.
Yes, Fender is scratching one lifelong wish off his "bucket list."
"This is something I've wanted to do since I was 10 years old," he said of his cross-country horseback ride that has taken him from Texas to Florida to Michigan over the past six months.
During his time on the road with two steeds, which he alternates riding, Fender has camped when weather permits, and stayed in motels when it hasn't.
Averaging some 30 miles a day, Fender hopes to arrive at his new home in Evergreen, Alabama, "sometime before Thanksgiving."
"I've met a lot of interesting people along the way," he said before resuming his southbound journey.
