First grader wins $5,000 grant for Southeast |

authoring a winning essay on the benefits of physical activity for students. The grant was one of more than $1 million awarded by Nickelodeon as part of its "Let's Just Play" giveaway promotion. According to a press release issued by the television network, the program "directly connects kids with the resources they need to build a new playground, restore basketball courts, buy new physical education equipment ... or whatever they need to enahnce an active and healthy play experience." Becca Lamon, principal at Southeast Elementary School, said the grant money will be used to purchase the indoor rock-climbing wall, as well as new floor mats, "gator" balls, a new parachute for a popular game, and field day activities. Ellliott's essay was selected from among 146 students at Southeast who entered the competition, as well as from students across the state and nation. The first-grader was present at Tuesday evening's board of education meeting to accept a certificate of appreciation for her efforts. —J Swygart
