SQUAWS PLACE 15TH
NEW CARLISLE — Bellmont finished 15th out of 34 teams in the AA race Saturday in the New Prairie Invitational, the biggest regular-season meet in Indiana and one of the biggest in the country with 2,716 participants. It was the identical finish that the Squaws had a year ago.
Jordan DeLong lead Bellmont with 45th place in 21:27 while Jessica Brewer ran 21:31 for 47th for the Squaws.
Frosh Sarah Garner ran 66th place in 21:56 in her first New Prairie race, the third best BHS time and just 25 seconds beind DeLong.
Garner's emergence gives Bellmont a strong third runner. "It was her personal best, and considering it was on that course and in that competition, it was a considerable improvement. And she passed four girls down the stretch," noted BHS coach Carl Risch.
"She stepped it up and was one of the bright spots of the day."
Risch also praised Brewer, who performed well, especially considering her problem with asthma. "Once she gets all (medication) that figured out she's going to be be able to make some strides," stated the coach.
The fourth Bellmont runner was Kylee Keuneke, who finished 23:32 in 131st. Olivia Babb ran 134th in 23:42 as the fifth Bellmont runner, her second best time ever.
Chelsea Gallogly finished 155th in 24:30, off of her normal pace for Bellmont. Nina Shuler finished 203rd in 38.18.
"It wasn't a bad day. A few girls run great, a few did not run up to their potential. We can still gain some ground before the end of the season," said Risch.
Bellmont hosts the NHC meet on Saturday, Oct. 3.
"Our goal is to be 100 percent or close to it my the tournament races. We're not there yet," he added.
Concordia won the AA reace with 74 points to the 99 of West Lafayette. Angola took third at 15. East Noble was seventh at 245. Bellmont totaled 416.
Hannah Osborn of Concordia took the top AA place at 19:02 and Kaisa Goodman of West Lafayette was next at 19:21.
In the jayvee race, Katie Norder led the Squaws with a 25:12, finishing 169th out of 412 total runners.
