Jim Compton, executive director of the UWAC, said his agency received $99,185.85 from the Lilly Foundation to be used for costs not covered by either insurance companies or by reimbursements from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The first checks went to two women in Geneva, Judy Banta and Mary Lou Stanley, and to the Town of Geneva. Banta got $750, Stanley was given $1,000, and the town received $2,866.10. Compton says other UWAC payouts will soon go to additional individuals and to the governments of Decatur and Adams County. In addition, he reported, $40,000 of the almost $100,000 total has been set aside to remove trees from the Wabash and St. Marys Rivers that were blown into the water during the June 9, 2008, storm. Statewide, Compton noted, the Lilly Foundation allocated $45 million to June storm victims. He said the foundation has always been a strong supporter of the United Way and chose it as the vehicle through which to distribute the money. At the Banta home, two large trees were blown down and there was potential damage to the house. At the Stanley home, two more big trees were damaged. Geneva spent $12,014.73 to clean up and clear away debris, of which FEMA paid $9,238.63. That left $2,866.10 to be covered by Lilly Foundation funds. Doug Milligan, who was Geneva's clerk-treasurer until January 1 this year, said the damages and expenses at the Banta and Stanley properties would have been part of Geneva's overall list of damage if the two women had told town officials before the town submitted that list to FEMA for reimbursement.
