Student Jennifer Amstutz, who welcomed the veterans and their guests, said, "This program is a time set aside to give honor to the true heroes among us." Veterans were applauded as they stood during the Adams Central Concert Band's rendition of "Marches of the Armed Forces." Vincent Quinones, a member of the National Guard and the county's Service Officer, was the program's guest speaker. Quinones told a story of a meaningful gesture he had experienced earlier in the day. He explained that he was sitting at the VA Hospital in Fort Wayne waiting to have some blood work done. "I saw a bunch of students and I had no clue what was going on," he said. "I was approached by two young men who were seventh and eighth graders from Central Christian School. They handed me a piece of candy and a [handmade] card." Quinones showed the card to the audience. The words "Happy Veterans Day" were visible on the outside. The inside of the card read: "Thank you for protecting me so I can go to school and play without worrying, and for being brave enough to do this." Quinones continued, "Veterans from past and present, it is an honor to be standing here in the same room with you right now. I take my hat off to you. I salute you." "Friends and neighbors, when you get a chance, say 'Thank you.'" The ceremony concluded with the Adams Central High School class of 2009 presenting a compilation of oral histories to the 44 veterans who participated in interviews that made the books possible. The program also featured: — The posting of the U.S. and military service flags by the color guard from the American Legion Post 43 in Decatur — The Adams Central Concert Band playing “Star Spangled Banner” — The Adams Central fifth grade Dimensions choir singing “Americans We” and “You are our Heroes” — A scroll of names of Adams County veterans — Three volleys — Adam Heyerly playing “Taps” — The Adams Central Swing Choir singing “A Star Spangled Celebration”
