company called ACS, which hired many of the local staffers to work at the downtown location. The new address will be 141 N. First St. when the office opens on June 2.
The building was occupied for years by the Leland Smith Insurance Agency.
The changeover from a state-operated agency to a privately-operated one took effect today, May 19, according to Lauren Auld, director of media relations for the Family Resources/Child Services agency.
Auld said such changes are being made in all 92 counties, but every county will retain a welfare office.
It was also announced that, in Adams County, the libraries in Decatur and Geneva have agreed to serve as assistance sites for people seeking help from the welfare system.
A statement from the Adams Public Library System (APLS) said that "services normally received through [the welfare department] must now be applied for online," including food stamps, cash assistance, and health coverage.
The statement adds, "The Adams Public Library staff is willing and able to help through this new process. To reserve a computer line, please call the Decatur library, 724-2605, or the Geneva library, 368-7270."
