several key defensive plays to post their 17th win of the season against just five setbacks. Entering the third inning with a 0-0 score, Bellmont put together a four-hit, one walk rally after two were out to score four runs, which would prove to be all that McCord would need to record another pitching decision. Kylie Ehrsam started the inning with her two-out single and stole second. Janelle Rhoades walked and Ehrsam scored on a RBI single by Katie Baker. The second run came in on Ashley Hackman’s RBI single and Katie Knous cleaned the bases up with a two-RBI base hit. Bellmont added a fifth run in the fifth when Baker drilled a single to score Ehrsam who had singled earlier and moved up when Rhoades was walked. DeKalb finally hit the scoreboard with one in the bottom of the sixth for a 5-1 game but the Squaws put the contest out of reach with a five-run burst in the top of the seventh. They loaded the bases as Ehrsam was hit by a pitch, Rhoades singled, and Baker walked. Following an out, Knous picked up her third RBI of the game with a walk forcing in Ehrsam. Jamie Hakes delievered a crucial two-RBI single, McCord brought home a run with an opposite field ground out to second, and Nikki Braun’s single down the right field line scored Hakes. The defensive play of the game was turned in by the Squaws in the bottom of the seventh as even though DeKalb was down by nine, they loaded the bases as relief pitcher Kaylee Faurote walked the first three batters she faced. The next batter hit what appeared to be a single up the middle to center to score a run but Ehrsam charged the ball and noticed the runner on second wasn’t running hard to third. She alertly fired a strike to Baker at third for a force out. Bellmont coach Chris Hakes then brought in Sami Grote in relief and the sophomore hurler quickly ended the game getting a Baron to pop up to her and then recorded a strikeout. Hakes also praised a defensive play of Knous at short during the game noting she went deep into the hole to field a ground ball and was able to throw the DeKalb runner out at first by over a step. “Katie struggled defensively earlier in the season but has been playing very well recently and is really hitting the ball well for us,” Hakes added. Bellmont played errorless ball in the contest and walked just one batter over the first six innings. Only two games stand between the Squaws and an undisputed NHC title this season as they travel to Homestead tonight for a 5 p.m. make-up game (third attempt) with the Spartans. On Monday, the Squaws will host Senior Night activities for Faurote and Ehrsam as they entertain East Noble at 5 p.m. (Senior Night ceremonies to begin around 4:15 p.m.). The Squaws will have a busy weekend as they travel to South Bend Riley Saturday for a doubleheader. Bellmont 10, DeKalb 2 Bellmont 004 010 5 -10-11-0
