...Arbor Day became Labor Day on Tuesday for third graders at Monmouth Elementary School as they took turns digging a hole to plant a dawn redwood tree that, in about 50 years, will stand 60 feet high beside the school. Arbor Day was actually observed on Friday, May 6. Overseeing the planting was Dwight Pierce, forester with the parks and recreation department. (Photo by Eric Mann)
