Vernon D. Liechty, 85, of Berne, passed away on May 6, 2013, at his home.
Vernon was born March 16, 1928, to the late Paul E. and Sarah A. (Felber) Liechty.
He married Ava Kraft on May 10, 1959, in Decatur; she preceded him in death.
Vernon's greatest joy in life was spending time with his family and living life on the farm. His random sense of humor could light up any room. He had a story for every occasion and loved to reminisce about old times. He had a passion for raising quality livestock, especially Holstein cattle. He retired from International Harvester in Fort Wayne after 30 years of service. In addition, he was a retired dairy farmer and a member of the Registered Holstein Association. He was also an avid bowler in his younger years.
Vernon was an active member of the First Mennonite Church in Berne. His retirement years were spent as a dedicated driver for the Amish, which brought him much enjoyment. Among survivors are a daughter, Jenny (Roger) Neuenschwander of rural Berne; three grandchildren, Amy (Nathan) Hirschy of rural Decatur, Eric (Jen) Neuenschwander of rural Berne, and Renee (Albert) Andrews of rural Monroe; seven great-grandchildren, Corbin, Aaron, and Ben Hirschy, Callie, Mackenzie, and Caiden Neuenschwander, and Isaac Andrews; a brother, Byron (Ruth Mary) Liechty of rural Berne; and a sister, Barbara Liechty of Berne.
Visitation will be from 2-5 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. Sunday, May 12, at Yager-Kirchhofer Funeral Home, and 9:30-10:30 a.m. Monday, May 13, at First Mennonite Church.
