March 23, 2012

The Indiana Basketball Coaches Association has released its first-team Academic All-State list of 29 boys and 28 girls as well as an honorable mention list including 146 boys and 148 girls around the state of Indiana. Two Bellmont Braves were selected to the honorable mention list for the award; seniors Payton Selking and Logan Smith.
The award commemorates student athletes who have maintained excellence on the court as well as in the classroom. A 3.5 GPA or higher on a 4.0 scale is required as well as a class rank in the upper 25%, an SAT score of 1,500 or an ACT score of 23.
Players who receive this award get a certificate from the IBCA presented to them in May. The award has been given to male players since 1973 and was expanded in 1980 to include the women's basketball programs.
IBCA executive director Steve Witty had this to say about the award, "The quality of these student-athletes shows that success in academics and success in athletics are not separate entities. Rather, in many cases, a player's success in the classroom directly contributes to his or her success on the floor."
Congratulations to both Selking and Smith for receiving the honor.
