MONROE — Bellmont senior 113-pounder Jon Poling cradled last year's sectional champ Adam Cook for a 1:44 fall, igniting the Braves on a key early 12-0 run Thursday in front of a nearly-packed house at the Hangar as the No. 13 BHS mat squad defeated rival Adams Central 36-18.
In a battle of former state streeters, Bobby Keuneke hit a last-second reversal to nip AC's Cody Walburn at 120 pounds. Blake Adams at 126 hit three takedowns to topple Central's Derek Ellinger at 126.
"Those were all three swing matches and we go 3-0 and picked up a pin at 113. What a start," said Bellmont coach Brent Faurote.
"I knew I had a job to do and I had to get it done," said Poling.
Faurote, who was not expecting an 18-point win over the 18-1 Jets, missed Keuneke's victory move. "I had my back turned trying to get Blake ready for his match when Bobby hit a great Granby. I'll have to watch that on tape," said the coach.
"I told them what needed to be done and they responded. The challenge was there and I like what they did," said Faurote, whose Braves take on South Adams at the Stardome Thursday.
Bellmont is 15-2 with the win while Central slipped to 18-2.
"We can't have a letdown because South Adams will be knocking on that door, and we don't want to open that door," said the BHS coach.
