T-Birds blast out 98 hits to capture Moon City Classic

    WAPAKONETA, O. — The Decatur Thunderbirds brought the big bats this past weekend to the Moon City Classic Baseball Tournament, taking the 16-team tourney with a perfect 6-0 record.
    The Decatur Baseball Association team slugged out 98 hits to the 16 of the opposition and won by the run rule in five of the six games. The T-Birds had only 19 innings of at-bats in the six games. The only close game was a 10-7 win over Anna (Ohio) Rockets in the third game on Saturday. The Birds lashed out 12 hits to win that game.
    The Thunderbirds are now 11-1 in 2 tournaments, winning both, while scoring 181 runs and only giving up 48 in 12 games. The T-Birds will be playing this coming weekend in Willshire.
    The T-Birds opened with a 13-1, four-inning win over Shawnee, O., then won 24-4 over the Sidney Athletics, crushing 24 hits, and earned the No. 1 seed for the Knockout Round.
    The 10-7 win over the Rockets was the key win for Decatur.    
    Kevin Brown led the way with 12 hits, including two homers and two triples. Brevin Slusher had 11 hits, with three triples and a double, while Payton Boyd slugged 10 hits, including two doubles.
    Ethan Corral ripped 9 hits, including 2 triples and Colin Mills had 9 hits, including a triple. Noah Macklin slammed 8 hits, with a double. Cam Voglewede had 6 hits with a ground-rule double, a triple and 1 double and Corey Miller drilled 6 hits, with two triples and three doubles.
    Aaron Lehrman slugged 6 hits (1 double), David Noetzel 4 and Nick Teeple 2 hits for the T-Birds.
    Brown recorded three pitching wins for the T-Birds, striking out 12 in 9 innings of work. Slusher had 1 win and 10 strikeouts in 4 innings hurled. Cam Voglewede recorded a victory plus two 2 saves and had 7 strikeouts. Nick Teeple recorded a  save with 1 strikeout.
    Noah Macklin secured a win with 3 strikeouts in 2 innings. Corey Miller hurled 2 innings and Colin Mills 1 inning.
