NEW HAVEN — Bellmont senior middle weight wrestler Anthony Stebing pronounced himself "fine" Tuesday night, answering concerns over dropping three weight classes to land a slot in the BHS lineup. He sure looked fine against 2010 state streeter Zach Zurbrugg as he jumped out 5-0, hitting his favorite fireman's carry, en route to a solid 8-6 win at 152 pounds, and that ignited a 50-19 Braves rout of their NHC foes.
"Coach Faurote told me to just go out and let it flow, and let it come to me. In that second period I hit the fireman's, caught him on his back and just held the lead from there," explained Stebing, one takedown from making state last year at 171 pounds.
Stebing has earned the 145-pound slot, but wrestled at 152 for an ill Will Busse Tuesday. "I weighed in a 149 (pounds) today. I'm going to go '45 Thursday night against Snider. I'm not missing any meals, still eating but small portions,," he explained.
There have been some voicing concern over the slide down the scales for Stebing. "Yeah, I've heard that, but they shouldn't worry. I'm fine."
Several other Bellmonters also did a nice job as Bellmont went to 2-0 in the NHC and 10-2 overall. Barry Humble's New Haven squad slipped to 5-2.
"Anthony did a nice job of filling in at 152 for us tonight against a state streeter from last year and a good, soild kid," praised BHS coach Brent Faurote.
"We told him to keep it close, stay in the match, and when the opportunity came, hit your move. "It was a 0-0 in the second period and he got the escape, hits his fireman, headhunts and picks up two nearfall and is up 5-0. Zurbrugg comes back with an escape and takedown, and Anthony does a nice job of countering a high-crotch (attack) and gets a takedown for the win.
"It's a great win for Stebing. It shows us how he can wrestle in that middle weight class. It was a better controlled match than his first one this weekend."
Three Bellmont upper weight grapplers remained unbeaten with dominant showings. Ryley Hankenson improved to 11-0 with a 1:25 fall over Matt Robinson at 171. Travis Thatcher his several takedowns then stopped Joe Quinn in 2:24 at 215, and heavyweight Daniel Meyer recovered from a brief gaffe in a tech fall over Nick Pritchard.
Jacob Girod continued his strong ways with a 2:56 fall at 112 pver Travys Collins, Blake Adams hit a few fireman's carries and pinned Andrew Warren at 125, and Brooks Faurote capped the night with a 4:32 pin of Austin Kraner.
John Mahlan ripped open a close match in period two, and, using his Turk-turn, clubbed Andrew Synram 14-1 at 160. Bobby Keuneke bloodied Justin Syndram with a 19-4 tech fall at 119.
Isaac Birch won a 5-2 decision over Casey Parris at 189.
Bellmont had a 103-pounder for the first time all season with the feisty Jordan Richards getting his career entry into varsity wrestling. He fell in 5:05, but showed a lot of fight. "He battled. We liked what we saw," praised coach Faurote.
The coach lauded several other wrestlers, including Ryley Hankenson, calling him "probably the best on our team right now, especially with the way he's chain-wrestling. We tell the kids to watch him. That's the way it needs to be done," offered Faurote.
New Haven coach Barry Humble was a bit disapointed with the loss of Zurbrugg. "We would liked to have won five (matches). Stebing's pretty sly. What I was disappointed with was that Bellmont dictated the match. They stayed close to the edge, never put themselbes in a bad position, and controlled things."
Bellmont will be at home with Snider Thursday and at East Noble Saturday for a loop triple-dual.
