South Adams, rated No. 19 in the state, completed a perfect wrestling regular season over the weekend by capturing the Tri Invitational with a 5-0 mark.
For the season, the Starfires finished 27-0, going 5-0 at Tri, the ECIC at Jay County, the New Castle Super Duals, the Spencer Haworth Invitational at SA, and at the Homestead Super Duals.
The Stars had one close match Saturday, defeating Alexandria 37-31. The Stars also defeated Hamilton Heights 54-15, Southridge 58-9, Northeastern 72-9 and Tri High 76-6.
Going 5-0 on the day were six Starfires: L.J. Moser at 112, Todd Batt at 125 and 130, Gabe Sprunger at 135, Josh Ehr at 152 and 160, Isaac Werst at 189, and Maverick Morningstar at 215 and heavyweight.
T.J. Burnfield at 145, Eric Pimentel at 119 and Adam Hofstetter at 171 all went 4-1 on the day.
Ehr, unbeaten on the season, scored the only fall for the Stars in the win over Alexandria. Moser, Batt, Sprunger, and Morningstar all scored victories, with Sprunger taking Blanton with an overtime takedown, 5-3. Batt won an 8-7 decision over another Blanton.
Landers, Werst and Nathan Wynn all accepted forfeits.
The Starfires will now aim at the ACAC Tourney Saturday at Woodlan. The Starfires won the regular-season crown with a perfect 7-0 mark. Garrett, Adams Central and Leo will all have strong tourney teams for the meet.
This is the first unbeaten season for South Adams wrestling, and this is the first time the Stars have been in the Indianamat.com poll, which includes all the wrestling schools in the state.
