St. Joe moves on in CYO
The St. Joe Commodores opened up their CYO volleyball tournament Wednesday night with both the seventh and eighth grade in action with both squads coming away with victories in the first round.
In the seventh grade match, St. Joe found themselves in the second round by virtue of the bye because of their number one seed. They matched up against St. Vincent's and won easily in two games, 25-18, 25-11.
Coach Mike Wilder praised his team's "excellent team passing," which allowed the girls to take over the match early. Leading the team in passing digs was Taylor Bebout with 15, Lizah Okoniewski with 13, Morgan Ellsworth and Carly Girod with 10 each, and Maddie Strickler with nine.
Lynae McDonald had six digs as well, while Madison Macklin and Alexis Coyne each had four digs to help the cause.
Bebout and McDonald each led the squad with seven assists, mostly to themselves, with Bebout also leading the way with nine kills and an ace and McDonald with four kills. Macklin and Okoniewski each had two kills.
Serving for the Commodores, Ellsworth and Okoniewski each had two aces and Girod had one.
The St. Joe eighth grade defeated St. John's of Fort Wayne in two games as well with scores of 25-18 & 25-14.
Leading the way for St. Joe was Maddi Malone who had 11 points on serve with an ace, seven of which came in game two when she served out the match on six straight points.
Devin Moser had eight points serving with an ace and 100% accuracy, Lexi Hammond had seven points with two aces, Beka Wilder had five points and Victoria Diaz had four points with an ace.
Wilder led the eighth graders in passing with three assists and a kill. Hammond had two assists, Diaz had an assist and a kill, and Malone had an assist and two kills.
Andi Schultz had two kills and a block for St. Joe and Brooke Sanderson pitched in with a kill.
The seventh grade will play the winner of the match-up between St. Charles and St. Joe/St. Elizabeth in the championship on Saturday at 10 a.m. The eighth graders will travel to St. Charles tonight in the semi-final round to play the host team at 7 p.m.
