FORT WAYNE—Bellmont held North Side scoreless for the first six and a half minutes of its girls varsity basketball game Thursday night at the By Hey Arena and came away with an easy 56-33 non-conference triumph to raise its record to 7-6 on the season.
Bellmont had run up a 13-0 advantage before the Redskins could score and the closest North Side could ever get after that was nine at 19-10.
The game was basically a varsity versus a junior varsity contest as North Side's roster contained no seniors and only one junior dressed for the game. Their leading scorer on the night, Quintiann LeShore (12 points), is a freshman.
"We played pretty well tonight. I thought we did a great job against their zone in the first half but struggled a little in the second half when they switched to a man-to-man defense," noted BHS coach Tory Fuelling.
Despite the lopsided win, the Squaws had shooting problems against the Redskins missing numerous close shots. They finished the night 17-50 for 34 percent while North Side was 14-53 for 26.4 percent.
Allison Gutierrez and Dana Kaczmarek sparked the early attack for the Squaws with Gutierrez tallying five of the opening 10 points for BHS, including a basket after she swiped the ball from a Redskin and drove in for an easy lay-up. Kaczmarek poured gasoline on the fire with her three-point shooting hitting 4-6 in the first half and had 14 of her game-high 18 markers in the first two quarters to pace Bellmont to a 29-10 halftime lead.
"Dana can do that (make treys). She shot the ball well tonight and that really helped us get out to the big lead in the first half," commented Fuelling.
After Kaczmarek, the Squaws finished the game with extremely balanced scoring. While no other player hit double figures, five girls tallied between six and nine led by Gutierrez with nine. Both Payton Schultz and Mikala Quinn knocked down seven, and Sara Williamson and Madison Schultz each added six. Reserves Brooke Zimmerman and Audrey Schultz also hit the scoring column with two and one respectively.
One of the main positive points for the Squaws was their ability to get to the foul line. They outscored North Side 18-2 from the charity stripe and took 26 shots in all from the line while the Redskins visited free throw territory just six times in the game.
Bellmont also had a decided advantaged on the boards taking down 38 misfires to 21 for North Side. Taylor Kuhnle snared eight rebounds to lead the Squaws while both Payton and Madison Schultz claimed seven.
Another factor for Bellmont was the inside play of Madison Schultz who had three blocked shots.
"The defense played well tonight. The guards were active on the perimeter and Maddie is a huge force when teams try to go inside. She makes them change their route and alter their shots," Fuelling said.
In the junior varsity game, Bellmont jumped out to a commanding 18-9 lead at halftime but salted away their good fortune with a lackadaisical second half. North Side came back to tie the game at 22-22 at the end of the third period and then hit the game-winning shot with just two seconds remaining in regulation for a 33-31 victory.
Audrey Schultz topped the Bellmont offense with 13 points while Megan Schueler had six, all from the foul line.
