Squaws take 2nd at Spencerville; Beery breaks records

SPENCERVILLE, OHIO—Two long-time girls cross country records fell by the wayside Saturday as Bellmont and South Adams participated in the Spencerville Bearcat Cross Country Invitational.
Bellmont coach Carl Risch had predicted that sophomore speedster Bailey Beery would probably break the BHS school record at some point this year and Beery didn't wait long as she pounded out a blistering 18:38.6 on the certified Spencerville course to win the race over 146 other runners.
To say Beery won the race is somewhat of an understatement. At about the 500-600 meter point of the 5K race Beery took the lead and never looked back. Her winning time was an amazing 1:27.2 faster than second place finisher Maddy Cohorn of Lima Shawnee (20:05.8) and Risch said he was in awe of the BHS runner noting "it was something else to see. She really made it look easy as she crossed the finish line over a quarter of a mile before anyone else did."
The Beery time of 18:38.6 eclipsed the BHS school record set (also at Spencerville) in 2005 by Wendy Mahlan of 18:49.
Beery also had a hand in the removal of the other record on Saturday as her time was the fastest in the history of the 37-year Spencerville Invitational. The previous best was 18:41 set in 2001 by Angela Homan of Spencerville.
Bellmont was the defending champion of the Spencerville Invitational but a strong showing by St. Mary's Memorial of Ohio edged the Squaws by a 59-71 tally. Bellmont placed their five scoring runners in the top 21 in the field and actually had six in the top 25 which Risch said in most tournaments would be good enough to win.
However, St. Mary's Memorial put two runners in the top 10 and then added spots at 13, 15, and 22. Risch said had the meet been a dual meet between the two schools, St. Mary's Memorial would have won 26-29.
