Squaws open NHC season with sweep over New Haven

NEW HAVEN — The Squaws put up a sweep against the fiesty New Haven Bulldogs on the road Thursday night winning 25-15, 25-13, 15-15.
The conference win felt more like a tune-up game for tomorrow's tournament in Ohio where they will face Henry Clay and Gilmore Academy in their pool. Based on the outcome of pool B, Bellmont could face Adams Central for a second time this season.
Against New Haven, Bellmont lost the first two points of the match, then came back with the next five to lead 5-2. The scoring was a preview of how most of the night would feel against the Bulldogs who showed a spirited effort for most of the match.
"New Haven probably knew we were going to come in here and beat them," noted Bellmont coach Craig Krull after the match. "They just came out here and played with a lot of energy. I give them a lot of credit. We may have been the better team but they stuck with us for awhile with their energy."
The Bulldogs have won just two matches this season in all with only three seniors on the team and a slew of younger, inexperienced volleyballers pacing the rest of the roster. Against Bellmont, New Haven made several miscues, but overall seemed to be running on emotion and energy catching the Squaws off-guard with some plays.
"They have some decent athletes and I think it's fair to say that everyone wants to play their best against us," admitted the BHS coach. "It was a frustrating night for me because I don't understand how we come into a match not at 100 percent. We have to get up for every match."
Despite leading by as many as nine in the opening set, the Bulldogs did not allow the Squaws to get comfortable. It was 22-15 when Bellmont finished out the final three points of the first set.
The second set featured somewhat of a surprise for the Bellmont faithful as injured junior, Sadie Alberson, emerged from the bench mid-way through the game and played in a few points. Alberson has been recovering from a high ankle sprain and has not been in a match yet this season.
