FORT WAYNE—Two teams with nearly identical records collided in non-conference girls varsity basketball action Tuesday night and the Bellmont Squaws returned to Decatur with a narrow 48-46 win over the Wayne Generals.
The Squaws moved to 8-9 on the season while dropping the Generals to 7-9 with the setback.
Bellmont led by 10 points at one stage in the third period but the Generals rallied to narrow the gap to 34-30 at the end of the quarter. The Wayne group scored the first five points of the fourth stanza including a trey by Victoria Thomas and actually led 35-34.
The cousin duo of Payton and Madison Schultz later reversed the Wayne lead as Payton hit Madison underneath for a bucket and Bellmont never trailed again after taking the advantage at 40-39.
Bellmont used the Schultz tandem to their advantage on the boards as well with Madison claiming 14 missed shots, four on the offensive end, and Payton grabbed 12 errant shots, five of which were offensive rebounds. Bellmont outrebounded Wayne in the game 39-32.
Scoring wise, Payton Schultz topped the BHS offense with 15 while point guard Dana Kaczmarek tallied 14. Madison Schultz hit nine, Allison Gutierrez had six, and both Mikala Quinn and Sara Williamson dropped in two. The Bellmont size helped with the Squaws outscoring the Generals 34-22 in the paint.
Bellmont held potential All-State guard Lacia Gorman (she has committed to play college basketball at the University of Wisconsin in Madison) to just 12 points on 3-11 shooting while Karah Peppler added 10.
