Squaws finish strong in opening golf invitationals

    The Bellmont Squaws golf team has started their season with a pair of invitationals in August including the Homestead Invite and their own Bellmont version.
    Against Homestead's field of 14 teams, the Squaws finished fifth overall with a combined 393 strokes from the best four out of five scores. The Leo Lady Lions dominated the field with a 359 led by Brooke Moser who had an 83 on the day at Timber Ridge.
    Penn, a perennial powerhouse in golf, finished second with a 368, while Carroll was third with 378, East Noble fourth with 387, then the Squaws. Other finishers behind Bellmont included the host team Spartans with 408, Fairfield in seventh with 426, Norwell with 431, Angola ninth at 439, Homestead's B-team at 440, Concordia with 468, Northrop at 475, and Bishop Luers at 485. Northridge had an incomplete score with only three golfers attending the match.
    For the Squaws, Morgan Ellsworth led the way with a 91, good enough for 10th place overall. Macy Phegley finished with a 95 followed by Lexy Norby's 102, freshman Emma Ainsworth's 105, and Rylee Hamilton's 108.
    Penn transfer Cassidy Jurkaites shot a medalist 77 to lead the field, while Carroll's Sarah Banister shot a 78 as the second-best shooter and her Charger teammate Kierstin Murphy was third overall at 80. Alyn Clark of East Noble was fourth overall at 81 strokes with Moser of Leo rounding out the top five....
