South Side took advantage of a weary Bellmont squad, playing its third game in four days, with an aggressive full court press and squeezed out a 71-51 verdict at the Archers' gym..
Despite the 20-point loss, which snapped a two-game Bellmont winning streak, Coach Tory Fuelling was pleased with the fight that his club put up. South's press resulted in 20 first-half turnovers, but the Squaws cut that in half in the second half.
"It was the first time the girls have seen that kind of pressure all year, and we haven't had all that much time to review it," said Fuelling.
"I was really pleased with the way we played the last three quarters. We got down but didn't quit. We came back and handled the press pretty well for the rest of the game."
South, which had four players in double figures, led 21-7 at the first stop. The Squaws got it together in the second period and scored 16 points, then battled the rest of the way.
Bellmont junior guard Allison Gutierrez was the spark, coming off the bench to lead the fight. She scored 12 points and was aggressive breaking the South Side press.
"I thought Allison came in and kinda settled us down a little bit. She was aggressively taking the ball to the basket and got some easy shots. The girls finally realized that you can penetrate against the pressure and we took advantage of it. Everyone started to settle down a little bit and played better with Allison's lead."
Bellmont defeated Jay County on Friday and Heritage on Saturday as their early-season schedule rush got into full flight.
"We haven't seen pressure like that yet this year and it's something we can't simulate in practice. We knew coming in it was something to deal with, and the last time we reviewed our press-breaker was Thursday because we played Friday and Saturday. We'll do better when we see it again," promised Fuelling.
Payton Schultz scored eight consecutive Bellmont points early in the fourth period and finished with 10 points, two rebounds and two assists. Madison Schultz tallied nine points with six boards and three blocked shots. Guard Dana Kaczmarek put in eight points with three assists.
Mikala Quinn scored seven points with two assists and a steal. Taylor Kuhnle put in three points and Sara Williamson two points and two assists.
Bellmont hit 17 of 34 shots from the field, with Kaczmarek knocking in two of three treys.
The 31 BHS turnovers helped South Side put the ball up 65 times, hitting 30. Ariana Simmons led the way with 16 points and two steals while Jomani Thomas tallied 12 and Jamesha Ridley had 11 with three assists.
Brittany Johnson had 10 points with four assists and four steals. Aysia Thomas put in nine points with DeJoyah Johnson scoring eight.
South Side won the jayvee battle, 60-24. Lakyn Gulley and Corean Sanders both scored 16 for South Side.  Audrey Schultz scored 13 for Bellmont while Brooke Zimmerman and Courtney Scherer both had four points.
Bellmont is slated to be at DeKalb on Dec. 4.
