South Adams dominates invitational, AC takes 4th
BERNE—South Adams cross country fortunes improved dramatically last Saturday as they hosted their annual Invitational and won the boys race by placing four of their top five runners in the top 10 and earned a second place finish in the girls competition.
The Starfires' Evan Liechty outraced Northfield's Caleb Augustus to the finish line for the blue ribbon. Liechty ended up at 16:21.43 while Augustus was just behind him at 16:22.67. Brody Shane took fourth for SA at 16:58 (he and Liechty were just two of four out of 160 runners to break the 17-minute mark).
Joel Hawbaker and Simon Sprunger also were in the top 10 with Hawbaker going 17:21.45 for sixth and Sprunger was eighth in 17:29.54. Tim Lehman had the fifth Starfire score finishing 27th in 18:20.
Other Starfire runners in the boys race were Cody Sprunger 18:22.90; Daniel Velasco 18:46.57, Sawyer Miller 18:59.79, Mark Smith 19:10.61, Andrew Steffen 19:12.88, Brett Affolder 19:13.35, Clayton Rhoades 19:33.76, Charlie Hirschy 20:18.12, Cole Litwiller 20:47.14, Boaz Marbach 21:10.52, and Jacob Werst 25:50.55.
Adams Central's Kyle Fawcett was the first Jet to complete the race and he did so in 17:41.44 for 11th place. Other AC runners were Gavin Kaehr 18:35.91, Eli Stoller 18:46.47, Nick Baumer 19:00.31, Ben Lehman 19:08.56, Dillon Hartman 19:43.29, Maverick Baumer 19:57.31, Michael Yoder 20:00.58, Jim Harrison 20:41.71, Colton Frauhiger, 21:04.30, Dylan Krueger 21:06.86, Ellison Kaehr 22:13.73, and Chance Reynolds 22:21.84.
South Adams won the boys event with 46 points to that of 59 for Frankton. Northfield was third with 72 followed by Adams Central 184, Lapel 188, Rossville 217, Monroe Central 225, Canterbury 229, Blackhawk Christian 235, Wabash 264, Carroll-Flora 278, Winchester 305, Bluffton 357, Centerville 359, Southern Wells 383, Clinton Prairie 408, Union City 428, and Cowan 451. Incomplete teams included Alexandria Monroe, Garrett, Randolph Southern, and Tri-Central.
South Adams was second in the girls race with 108 points with Northfield winning the event with 75. Adams Central was fourth with 141 after Southern Wells at 118.
Hannah Moore took second in the team scoring with a 20:12.28 time for South Adams (Whitney Wiist of Winchester won in 19:36.67 but the Falcons had an incomplete team).
Other SA runners scoring in the match were Kristen Muselman, seventh in 21:04.94, Jenna Smith, 15th in 21:45.61, Allison Amstutz, 16th in 22:12.24, and Alexis Ford, 68th in 25:25.57. Sydne Zuber finished in 26:30.06 for SA.
Adams Central's Kayla Isch was ninth in 21:11.79 to lead the Jet contingent. She was followed in scoring by Jessica Dunn, 24th in 22:41.17, Leah Spangler, 27th in 22:59.44, Olivia Macklin, 36th in 23:39.17, and Jessica Ripley, 45th in 23:56.19. Others running for the Jets were Mary Fox 24:32.52, Madison Carroll 24:58.93, Olivia Mishler 29:10.79, and Morgan Hill 29:19.90.
