Son goes on duty, dad takes over

March 1, 2011

Vince Quinones

    Like son, like father.
At Monday's meeting of the Adams County commissioners, the three executives voted unanimously to name Julius Quinones of Decatur as the assistant county veterans' affairs officer  so he can fill in for his son, Vince, the service officer, while his son is called up for active duty in the Middle East with the U.S. Air Force.
The younger Quinones, who is an E8 (first sergeant), said he will ship out on March 2 for six months of service that will give him 31 years overall.
The elder Quinones served two years in the late 1950s in the U.S. Army and added with a smile that he was on the same base as a private by the name of Elvis Presley, but never got to meet the iconic star.
Vince Quinones also reported that he asked his father to fill in for him after first asking three other people to do so: two flatly turned him down and the third never got back in contact with him.
On another matter, the commissioners signed a document to certify the tax-exempt status of three projects to be paid for by a $2.6 million loan that will be sought by Adams Memorial Hospital (AMH).
The projects are the building of a medical office by the hospital for new doctors, the conversion of an unused wing of the nursing center at Woodcrest Retirement Community into a new extended care unit as the ECU is moved out of the hospital, and the reroofing of every building at Woodcrest. AMH owns Woodcrest.
    Also at the meeting:
    • A unanimous vote approved the replatting of Swiss Subdivision on State Rd. 218 near County Rd. 400 West.
    • The commissioners accepted the $96,740.80 bid of Pioneer Associates of Albion to build a new bridge over Blue Creek on County Rd. 200 South between CR 200 West and CR 300 West.
