Snow, big winds, colder temps in store for area

January 12, 2012

The Decatur area was under a winter weather advisory this morning, with some slight snow accumulation expected today and one to three inches tonight. The other half of the one-two punch is much colder temperatures.
The National Weather Service says an approaching winter storm could drop more than a foot of snow on far northern Indiana and bring wind-whipped blowing and drifting snow, The Associated Press reported.
The weather service has issued a winter storm warning for eight northern Indiana counties just south of Lake Michigan to the state’s northeastern corner.
The weather bureau said rain and snow were likely in this area between 1 and 4 p.m. today, then snow after 4. A high of 37 was said likely, with a west wind at 10-15 mph and gusts up to 20 mph.
With the one to three inches of snow tonight, local residents will see a low near 18 plus a west wind between 20 and 25 mph, plus gusts up to 40 mph.
Snow is expected again Friday, with less than an inch probable, forecasters said. The high will be only about 21 degrees. Meanwhile, the blustery west winds will continue. Friday's low will be around 13, wiht 20-25 west winds gusting up to 35 mph.
Saturday, the winds will die down, no precipitation is likely, and a high near 24 is expected, according to the weather bureau.
Wednesday's high in Decatur was 42 and this morning's low was 31. Normal highs and lows for this time of the year are 32 and 17, respectively.
Forecasters predict a strong storm over the Central Plains will bring more than 10 inches of snow north of U.S. 6 in Indiana and nearly 15 inches in areas by Friday afternoon.
Four to eight inches of snow are forecast  south of the highway, with snowfall amounts declining the further south one goes.
Strong northwest winds will significantly reduce visibilities with blowing snow and drifting will create hazardous driving conditions.
