Six Braves honored for football all-conference in NHC

The Bellmont Braves managed to get six of their players onto the Northeast Hoosier Conference list this week as they head into their second regional match ever on Friday against West Lafayette.
Seniors Brian Hakes, Ben Baker, and Isaac Birch all were honored for their position on the first team, while Cody Walters, Lance Shifferly, and junior Jake Brown were named to the second team for the conference.
Hakes was named to the roster at the defensive linebacker position for his stellar tackling and energy as he came away with the punt block and extra point block that sealed the game last Friday against Western.
Baker received his honor at the offensive guard position for the first team. He has anchored the Bellmont front line on offense all season long.
Birch was honored for the defensive end position and has been one of the leading tacklers for the Braves since day one.
On the second team, Walters represents the Braves at the running back position. He scored the go ahead touchdown in the Western sectional final game and has come on strong at the end of the season as a reliable running back option for Bellmont.
Shifferly landed the second-team nomination for his defensive back position for his great defense on and off the line stopping both the run and pass when needed.
The Braves are joined on the all-conference teams by Homestead who put 19 members of their conference champion squad on the list.
The Carroll Chargers put 11 members on the conference list, Columbia City placed eight members, DeKalb received five players on the list, New Haven placed eight, and East Noble managed to get 12 players.
The Braves finished out the year 2-5 in the conference, which was good enough for sixth as powerhouse Homestead finished undefeated at 7-0.
Despite the Braves being the only team still playing football in mid-November from the NHC, only Norwell managed to put less members from their squad on the all-conference list as they had only two.
