Services are held today for Guardsman killed with Taylor

July 27, 2012

Spc. Sergio Eduardo Perez Jr.

Funeral services were scheduled today for the Indiana National Guardsman killed with Nick Taylor of Berne in an attack in Afghanistan.
Approximately 60 Indiana Patriot Guard riders and local law enforcement escorted the body of Spc. Sergio Eduardo Perez Jr. of Crown Point from Gary/Chicago International Airport to a funeral home in his hometown on Wednesday.
The 21-year-old soldier died July 16 in the Kandahar province of Afghanistan after rocket-propelled grenades and small arms fire hit the vehicle he was in. He and Taylor were members of a bomb-clearing unit from the Valparaiso-based 713th Engineer Company.
Viewing of the body was held at a Crown Point funeral home on Thursday, and a funeral mass was scheduled for 10 a.m. today at Our Lady of Consolation  in Merrillville.
Perez was a 2010 graduate of Lake Central High School and he enlisted later that year. He is survived by his parents — Sergio E. Perez Sr. of East Chicago and Veronica Orozco of Crown Point — and sisters Candice Perez, Andrea Jimenez, and Karyme Jimenez.
While Perez was deployed, he was promoted to the rank of specialist in April.
