Search continues for kayaker missing in St. Marys River

June 30, 2014

The search continued today for a missing Decatur man who was last seen Friday kayaking on the St. Marys River.
Steve Seitz, 54, was kayaking near Pleasant Mills with another man when his kayak struck a log jam and overturned, according to  Indiana Conservation Officer Sgt. Patrick Heidenreich. Seitz was thrown into the water and did not resurface. He was not wearing a life jacket when the boat overturned, Heidenreich said.
The search began Friday around 8:20 p.m. and has continued throughout the weekend.
Conservation officers have been assisted in the search by the Adams County Sheriff’s Department and Decatur Fire Department.
According to Assistant Fire Chief Jim Hitchcock, firefighters responded at 8:22 p.m. Friday and were on-scene until 1:35 a.m. Saturday. Rescue crews resumed their efforts at 7 a.m. Saturday, and again around 9 a.m. Sunday.
Firefighters were to resume their search today.
