Sarah Marie (Squeeky) Mendez, 81, of Decatur, died Dec. 8, 2013, at Adams Heritage Nursing Center in Monroeville.
Sarah was born Aug. 18, 1932, in Adams County to the late J. Carl and Ada (Hakes) Hower. On Sept. 6, 1947, she married Blas G. Mendez.
Sarah was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. She was a member of the Daughters of American Revolution and V.F.W. Women’s Auxiliary. She worked for Thunderbird Products for 37 years.
Sarah is survived by her husband of 66 years, Blas G. Mendez of Decatur; nine children, Barbara C. (Mark) Corral, Dolores A. (D.J.) Lopez, Jesse M. (Cindy) Mendez, Lee Andra (Frank) Aguon and Anthony B. (Ingrid) Mendez, all of Decatur; Patricia E. (Dennis) Stapleton of Milwaukee, Wisc., Kathryn A. (Jeff Gaskill) Hake of Decatur, Anita M. (Don) Main of Indianapolis, and Annette M. (John) Liederbach of Decatur. Also surviving are 25 grandchildren, 39 great grandchildren and three great great grandchildren. Sarah was the last surviving child of Carl and Ada Hower and was preceded in death by a son, Joseph M. Mendez, and a grandson Damian M. Corral.
Please join the family for visitation and sharing from 1-8 p.m. Friday at Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home, with reciting of the Holy Rosary at 1:30 p.m..
Friends may also call from 9-10 a.m. Saturday at the St. Mary’s Parish Hall, followed by a 10 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church. Father Patrick Joseph and Deacon Jerry Kohrman will officiate. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
