Ruth Ellen Wiggins Edwards, 86, of Warren, Ind., passed away Wednesday, February 13, 2013, at Heritage Pointe Home.
She was born in Dixon, Ill., to the late Frank Davis Sr. and Frances Irene Taylor Wiggins.
Ruth married Herbert LeRoy Edwards of Lanark, Ill. in 1945; he survives.
After her mother’s death in 1933, Ruth left Dixon High School to care for her four siblings and was supervisor at the Freeman Shoe Company of Dixon, making Army boots during World War II. At the age of 64 ,she fulfilled her dream of a high school diploma from Rensselear Central High School in 1990. With family as her career, Ruth worked part -time for W. T. Grant store, was a Title 1 Reading Tutor for Warsaw Community Schools, and Licensed Practical Nurse for Murphy Medical Center, Warsaw, IN.
Volunteering in her community, Ruth was a Chaplain Assistant at Murphy Medical Center and served as treasurer of the Jasper County Hospital Auxiliary and as a clerk in the hospital gift shop. Herbert and Ruth volunteered for mission work trips to Laurel Mission, Kentucky, and Stillwell, Oklahoma. While living at Heritage Pointe, Ruth volunteered in the gift shop and with bingo activities.
Among survivors are four daughters, RoxyAnn (Michael) Casper of Decatur, Marsha Edwards of Indianapolis, Theresa (Gary) Wright of Frankton, Ind., and Denise Edwards of Corvallis, Mont.; sister, Betty Jean Murray of Dixon, Ill.; two brothers, Gerald Herbert Wiggins of Deltona, Fla., and Harold Allen Wiggins of Dixon, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Ella (Adam Eichhorn) Casper, Emma (Forrest) Powell, Evan Casper, Ephrem Casper, Brandy (John) King, Trent and Taylor VanBriggle; two stepgrandchildren, Kevin (Cindy) Wright and Todd (Tyra) Wright; two great-grandchildren, Josie and Justin King; and seven stepgreat-grandchildren, Ashley (Kyle) Douglas, Kirk Gaither, Rachel, Taylor, and Bronson Wright, Jake and Joe King.
Preceding Ruth in death was one brother, Frank Davis Wiggins Jr., on March 22, 2009.
Visitation will be from 12:30-3 p.m. Saturday, February 16, at Heritage Pointe Chapel, 801 Huntington Ave., Warren, Ind.
Funeral services will be at 3 p.m. Saturday, also in the chapel.
Burial will be in Springhill Cemetery at Heritage Pointe.
Preferred memorials are to UMMH Foundation in Warren and Family Life Care in Berne.
