For more than 30 years, Sue Eichhorn has been a mail carrier at the Decatur Post Office, including the past 26 years on rural route five.
She was recently honored by the U.S. Postal Service for achieving that milestone. A certificate signed by E. Lynn Smith, the manager of the Fort Wayne district of the USPS, congratulated Eichhorn for her service and added, "Over the years, there have been many changes and improvements in the postal service. Your contribution assisted in making these changes possible."
She also was received a 30-year pin from the USPS.
In presenting the certificate to Eichhorn, Decatur Postmaster Wes Worth, who also has more than 30 years with the Postal Service, said Eichhorn's first four years were as a substitute carrier on rural routes six and eight.
He said she has witnessed "generations of customers" in more than a quarter-century on route five, with children growing up and grandchildren being born.
Worth said Eichhorn told him that the people she serves on her route have become "part of her extended family."
He noted that in his long career at various post offices, "I've met a lot of Sues," who are just as "dedicated and committed" as Eichhorn is. There are hundreds of thousands of people just like Sue Eichhorn who are doing similar jobs for the postal servioce, Worth stated.
All mail carriers, said Worth, become "part of their customers' daily lives. They rely on us."
Eichhorn and her husband Kent have one daughter and two grandchildren.
