Bellmont track coach Carl Risch reports that only 27 are out for girls track, but he's still smiling.
"We have some real quality this year," said Risch, noting the return of sophomore sprinter Alexis Harvey, 800 runner Jessica Brewer, who went to state two years ago, and some promising freshmen.
"The numbers are down a little, but we definitely are going to score some points," said Risch.
Frosh sisters Holly and Bailey Hankenson, who played on Bellmont's state championship volleyball squad, are running track. Risch hopes to use them in the 1600 relay.
Holly Hankenson set numerous Bellmont Middle School track records. She will be running in both hurdle events. Bailey will be in the pole vault and long jump.
Harvey will again be in the 200 and 100 meter events. She made it to state last year in the 200.
Brewer made the state field as a sophomore in the 800 and hopes to be back in top form this year.
Bellmont opens the season on March 30, hosting Bishop Luers in a dual meet at Bob Worthman Stadium, starting at 5 p.m. Bellmont hosts a three-way meet (no teams listed on schedule) on May 3. Those are the only two home meets on the slate.
Bellmont will be at South Adams on May 6 for the South Adams Invitational.
