Rifle program at NA leads to new insurance vendor

June 12, 2014

Attempts by officials of the North Adams Community Schools district to secure liability insurance have been rejected by Selective and EMC insurance companies because of the school district’s rifle shooting program.
Bellmont High School is one of nine schools in Indiana to compete recently at the state level in target shooting. Because the school offers the rifle sport, insurance companies feel there is too much liability and refuse to offer insurance, Business Manager Larry Carty explained.
“There has never been an incident on the (shooting) range,” Carty said. The program is led by certified instructors and shooting meets are conducted on individual ranges and scores are compared. “We don’t transport the weapons to other schools and many safety measures are taken when the team members handle the weapons,” Carty said.
