Repair work at BMS could top $300,000

January 13, 2011

    A preliminary assessment of water leakage problems at Bellmont Middle School has determined that repairs at the school could cost more than $300,000.
    Larry Carty, director of facilities and grounds for the school district, said Structure Tec Group had performed the assessment and will set bid specifications for the project. Damage has been caused by ground settling in portions of the middle school building and some irregularities during the original construction of the building more than two decades ago.
    Carty said the project could be divided into multiple phases to allow the district to avoid a single, large lump-sum expenditure.
    In other business at Tuesday's meeting of the North Adams board of education, the board agreed to re-establish a Rainy Day fund — a process required annually by the state of Indiana — using funds left over from the 2010 Rainy Day fund and with $400,000 encumbered but not used last year in the school bus replacement fund.
    Personnel moves approved by the board included:
    Granting medical leave for the remainder of the school year to social studies teacher Lou Koning;
    Approving the resignation of Heather Burford as After-School 21st Century tutor;
    Approving the assignment of Michelle Houser, Angela Johnson and Kurt VanHorn as After-School 21st Century study tables teachers; Houser as National Honor Society sponsor; and Megan Kitson as high school assistant cheerleading coach.
    In other business:
    • Superintendent Wylie Sirk said the district ended 2010 with a cash carry-over of $732,520.
    • Board members Tim Ehlerding and Ben Faurote were named president and secretary, respectively, of the district's Board of Finance.
    • Ehlerding reported that interest income earned by the district in 2010 totaled slightly less than $30,500.
