Reginald Thomas Welch, 67, of Decatur, passed away at 7:10 a.m. Friday, November 5, 2010, at Adams Memorial Hospital.
He was born on July 6, 1943, in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, to Rev. Robert Welch and Helen (Wittwer) Welch.
A graduate of Adams Central High School, he received his bachelor's degree in 1965 from Manchester College in North Manchester.
After marrying Sharon Harden on December 19, 1965, he received his master's degree in education from Indiana University at Bloomington in 1967.
Reg was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather. He was a past scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 65 in Decatur and a member of the Decatur Masonic Lodge 571 F&AM, of which he was a past Master. He received an Award of Honor as Mason of the Year just this past Saturday.
Reg was a member of the Scottish Rite and the Mizpah Shriners of Fort Wayne, a longtime member of the Decatur Optimist Club, and an honorary member of the Decatur High School Class of 1964.
Reg taught mathematics in Broward County, Florida; for Fort Wayne Community Schools; and at Bellmont and Heritage high schools. He retired from Heritage after 25 years of teaching in 2004 to enjoy more time with his devoted granddaughters.
He was a member of St. Mark’s United Methodist Church in Decatur, where he was active in his Sunday School class and was a former trustee.
Reg is survived by his wife, Sharon; his son, Tom and Tom’s wife, Sharel, and three granddaughters, Alyssa, Kathleen, and Lizette, all five of whom are of Indianapolis. He is also survived by three brothers and their families, Richard Welch (and wife Liz), of Tampa, Florida; James Welch (and wife MaryLynn) of Decatur; and Donald Welch of Monroe.
Reg and Sharon also had a Danish exchange student, Henrik Jensen. Henrik and his family is considered members of the Welch family.
Reg was a 34-year survivor of cancer, so every year since 1976 has been a gift.
Visitations are 4-8 p.m. on Monday, November 8, 2010, at Haggard and Sefton Funeral Home, Decatur, and one hour prior to services at the church. A Masonic service will be held at 8 p.m. Monday following visitations.
Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. on Tuesday, November 9, 2010, at St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, with Rev. Michael Heinbaugh officiating. All members of Masonic Lodge 571 of Decatur will be honorary pallbearers.
Memorials are to St. Mark’s United Methodist Church, the Angel Cancer Fund within the Adams County Community Foundation, or the Decatur Masonic Lodge.
