Redone piano’s debut slated

February 21, 2013

Med Smith shows off redone baby grand

A 1923 Kimball baby grand piano, restored to beauty by the efforts of Medford Smith of Decatur, will have its public debut on Saturday when The Friends of the Library will host an “Open That Bottle Night” fundraiser from 7-9 p.m. at the Adams Public Library branch in Decatur.
The piano was found in poor condition in the onetime Stoner house at Third and Jefferson streets before the building was demolished a couple of months ago.
Due to severe leaking through the roof, the piano "was in terrible shape," said Smith, president of the library board. He got the piano removed and taken to his workshop east of Decatur and spent more than 100 hours refurbishing it.
Recently, Smith's cousin, Larry Merriman, tuned the Kimball and it was taken to the library.
No one is quite sure where the piano came from or how long it was in the house, but it's now in a safe and secure place.
At Saturday's fundraiser, Chet Longenberger will play the baby grand as part of the evening's activities. Also on tap are wine tasting, cheese, and more. Tickets are $25 for individuals or $40 per couple and are available from members of the sponsoring Friends of the Library, at the main desk in the Decatur library, and will be available at the door Saturday night.
Money raised on Saturday will be used to fund the park the library board is planning to set up on the corner lot where the home once stood. The green area will be known as Storybook Park.
For further information on the proposed park, go to Adams Public Library System website and at the top left of the page is a link named Storybook Park plans.
