Quick rebuild of complex seen

April 27, 2012

Residents of Oakwood Terrace Apartments in Berne who survived a devastating fire this week surveyed the damage and tried to salvage some of their belongings on Thursday afternoon.
Jeremy Weaver, a friend of apartment complex owner/manager Keith Hansel, said, "Demolition is expected to begin on Tuesday." He added that after the burned-out building is razed, rebuilding will begin immediately and should take about two weeks to complete.
In the meantime, said Weaver, vacant apartments located in the same complex on Interlaken Drive are expected to be cleaned up to give the displaced residents somewhere to live while the three, two-story apartments that burned are being rebuilt.
The vacant apartments will receive new floor coverings and a new coat of paint within the next few days. Until the apartments are ready, accommodations for the residents have been made at the Black Bear Inn through the local Red Cross. Weaver said, "The community has been a great help."
Weaver added, "It was an accident. Nobody got hurt and stuff can be replaced. For what happened though, they [the residents] are very hopeful and bright."
