The annual spring musical is coming to the Bellmont High School theatre this Saturday and Sunday: Andrew Lloyd Weber's "The Phantom of the Opera."
Christine Daae (senior Olivia Babb) is a dancer in Madam Giry's (senior Rachael Coclasure) troupe for an opera house and is receiving voice lessons from a mysterious "Angel of Music." When the opera house's lead soprano, Carlotta (sophomore Madison Stoppenhagen), quits after being grievously insulted, Christine is encouraged to take her place.
Soon after, she reunites with her childhood friend Raul (sophomore Corbin Poling) and meets her Angel of Music and voice teacher, the infamous Phantom of the Opera (junior Connor Hakes).
Preparing for this year's musical has taken countless hours for all involved. For a time before the final performance, members of the band that will play in the musical and the show choir practice separately, so all involved know what to expect when they combine. Now, with the musical performance dates peeking around the corner, the two groups coordinate for the first time, figuring out the kinks and discrepancies that would otherwise hinder their performance.
Practicing for countless hours, both the Bellmont pit orchestra and the Bellmont show choir have worked tirelessly trying to perfect the beloved musical.
"We practically live, breathe, and eat Phantom," Bellmont senior and fourth0year pit member Haley Handshoe said. "But it'll be worth it in the end."
With a mysterious phantom, a repertoire of songs that are famous the world over, and a surprise before the first act is finished, this year's musical is, without a doubt, sure to be a treat.
Performances are set for 7 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday. At the Saturday night event, the theatre will be renamed Erekson Memorial Theatre in tribute to Reid and Evelyn Erekson.
Reserved seats are $7 for adults, $6 for students and seniors, and $6 general admission. For information about tickets, ads, or being a patron, call Jeannie Smith at BHS: 724-7121, ext. 4.
