The dispatch center at the Adams County Jail got a cell phone call early Friday afternoon from a man who said he was blindfolded in a van traveling north on US 27 toward Decatur and he was going to be forced to rob a bank.
The sheriff's department, Decatur police and the Indiana State Police all swung into action. It was thought that the van had stopped in the Decatur Plaza at N. Second St. and Winchester Road, but police were unable to find it.
They checked out the El Camino restaurant and, eventually, were able to track the cell phone to somewhere in Fort Wayne.
"It turned out he had called Jay County (police), too, so we gave Fort Wayne (police) a heads-up. It was a hoax, but we had to check it out," said one officer involved.
