Plaza purchased by AEP; substation planned

November 20, 2013

What has been rumored for several weeks came to light as fact at Tuesday night’s Decatur City Council meeting: American Electric Power has purchased the vast majority of the Decatur Plaza Shopping Center at the north edge of Decatur and will construct a substation to mainly service nearby Bunge North America.
AEP now owns the entire parking lot and all of the buildings except those on the strip at the west end which runs north and south and contains just one business, Decatur True Value Hardware. That portion of the shopping center was recently purchased at auction by Greg Fleming, owner-operator of Fleming Excavating.
According to reports, True Value will remain in business for the foreseeable future.
