Phillip J. Schurger

    Phillip J. Schurger, 60, of Decatur, died Wednesday, December 19, 2012, at Adams Memorial Hospital.
    He was born in Decatur on November 1, 1952, to the late Severin H. and Madeline C. (Alig) Schurger.
    Phil was a member of St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church and of its adult choir. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Msgr. J.J. Seimetz Council 864, where he served as Past Faithful Navigator of the 4th Degree Assembly.
    He was a signalman for Conrail for 20 years, working from Delphos Ohio until a work disability made him change jobs. He was an Operating Engineer, International Union of Operating Engineers Local 103, for the last 15 years, working for numerous contractors in northeast Indiana.
    Phil lived on the family homestead, where he enjoyed gardening, beekeeping, and helping all the members of his family with his construction talents and mechanical knowledge.
    Among survivors are a son, Phillip J. Schurger II of Fort Wayne; daughter, Diana (Bill) Speller of Payne, Ohio; Godmother, M. Virginia Schurger of Decatur; two brothers, Severin G. Schurger of Bellingham, Wash., and Frederick A. (Teresa) Schurger of Decatur; sister, Susan E.S. (Larry) Zurcher of Decatur; numerous nieces and nephews, and four grandchildren.
    Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. on Friday, December 21, at Haggard-Sefton & Hirschy Funeral Home, with a reciting of the Holy Rosary at 3:30 p.m. The Knights of Columbus 4th Degree Honor Guard will stand guard from 6-8 p.m.
    A mass of Christian burial will be held at 8:30 a.m. on Saturday, December 22, at St. Mary of the Assumption Catholic Church, with visitation one half-hour prior to the service in the St. Mary’s Parish Hall. Father David Voors will be presiding.
    Burial will take place in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery.
    Preferred memorials may are to the St. Mary’s Choir.
