People must be registered for NA vote

March 30, 2011

To vote in the upcoming North Adams Schools referendum, a person must be registered to vote, Adams County Clerk Gayla Reinhart said Tuesday.
Midnight next Monday is the deadline to register. For information, call the county clerk's office.
There has been some speculation that anyone residing with the North Adams district is eligible. To cast a vote, however, a person must live within the district and be a registered voter.
To vote in the referendum, Reinhart said, "You must be a registered voter 18 years old or older [living] within the North Adams Schools District. In the past, a voter who is 17 and will be 18 on or before the November general election could vote. That is not the case this time," since all those who vote must be registered to do so and must be at least 18 years old on or before May 3.
Indiana’s secretary of state says Hoosiers have the option to register online, on a mobile device, by mail or in person. Residents with a valid Indiana driver’s license or Indiana state-issued identification card can visit www.IndianaVoters.com to register online or by mobile device.
The May 3 vote will be from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. at the precincts in the NA district.
Early voting will be held from Monday, April 25, until Monday, May 2, in the main hallway of the Adams County Courthouse, outside the clerk's office. Early voting will be between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on April 25-29 and 8 a.m. to noon on Saturday, April 30, and on Monday, May 2.
The only primary voting in the county will be within the North Adams district since there are no primary races in Decatur, Monroe, Berne or Geneva.
North Adams is seeking approval for a $1.25 million tax increase over seven years.
In making the announcement, Reinhart said, "This is going to be a new experience for the voters. We will not have the usual candidates on a ballot to choose from. Instead, North Adams Schools will have a question on the ballot and it is a simple 'yes' or 'no' vote."
The county clerk added, "Please take the time to make certain you are registered to vote and then vote! It is your way to make your voice heard and opinion count. Don't let elections go by without your voice being heard."
