Pedestrian hit; listed critical

December 27, 2011

A Decatur man remains in critical condition with head injuries in Parkview Hospital in Fort Wayne today after he walked out in front of a vehicle on S. 13th Street and was struck on Christmas Eve.
The report, released today by the Decatur Police Department, said Brandon A. Heath, 21, N. Second Street, walked in front of a car driven by Virginia K. Hoffman, 67, Mix Avenue, Decatur, at 6:33 p.m. Saturday.
Police said Hoffman told them she was northbound on 13th Street near Madison Street when Heath, dressed in dark clothing, walked in front of her vehicle. She said she was unable to avoid hitting the man.
Several witnesses all concurred with Hoffman's statement.
A police crash scene investigator and other authorities were summoned to the scene and concluded Heath was improperly crossing 13th Street without due regard for the traffic. The police report also noted that alcohol and drugs may have been a factor in Heath's walking into traffic.
Police estimated approximately $1,500 in damage was done to the Hoffman vehicle.
