Paul E. Strickler, 94, of Decatur, passed away at 10:24 a.m. on Friday, December 31, 2010, at his residence.
He was born on April 23, 1916, in Adams County to Clarence G. and Goldie G. (Shoaf) Strickler.
Paul married Kathryn R. Pyle on September 2, 1939.
He is survived by his wife, Kathryn R. Strickler; three daughters, Cassandra K. Sanderson, Mrs. Paula J. (Ben) Eliseo, and Mrs. Cynthia L. (Doug) Rieth, all of Decatur; one son-in-law, Duane Lee of Bradenton, Florida; 21 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a daughter, Deborah Lee, and two brothers, Clarence and Robert Strickler.
Paul and his wife Kathryn were co-owners of Adams County Trailer Sales Inc., Strickler Trailer Court, Oakridge Estates, and Strickler Family Enterprises. He served on the board of governors of the Mobile Home Association and won several top selling awards in the national mobile home industry.
Paul was a member Decatur Church of God, of which he was trustee.
He was one of the founders of Decatur Bank and Trust Co. (now First Merchants Bank) and was a past chairman of the board of Decatur Bank and Trust. He was instrumental in the organization of Decatur’s Industrial Park and the Christmas lights project in the downtown district.
He was also a member of the Economic Commission that worked to entice new industry to Decatur.
Paul and Kathryn were dual recipients of Stephen Decatur Award given annually by the Decatur Chamber of Commerce. They were also the primary contributors to the Paul and Kathryn Strickler Cancer Institute at Adams Memorial Hospital.
He served on the board of Anderson University in Indiana and he was a founder and lifelong member of the Decatur Optimist Club. He was also a member of the Decatur Lodge 571 of the Free and Accepted Masons.
Visitation is 2-8 p.m. on Tuesday, January 4, 2011, at Haggard and Sefton Funeral Home, Decatur. An Optimist memorial service will be held at 8 p.m., followed by a Masonic service at 8:15 p.m.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, January 5, 2011, at Decatur Church of God, with calling one hour prior to the service. Officiating will be Dr. Robert Brink.
Burial will take place at Decatur Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to Decatur Church of God or to the Strickler Cancer Institute.
