MONROE—Adams Central dropped its second game in as many nights in girls varsity softball to Heritage with this game counting toward the ACAC standings and the visitors came away with a 6-5 decision.
Heritage scored in the top of the seventh on a single to break a 5-5 tie and then Knefelkamp shut down the Jets in the bottom of the seventh for the win.
"We made too many mistakes again tonight. We have to tighten it up a bit," analyzed AC coach Cary Blake.
Blake said he thought the Jets "battled tonight but just came up a bit short. You have to play good defense and hit it where they are not. Tonight we hit it hard right at them a few times."
Both teams scored at least once in each of the first three innings with Heritage getting one in the first and second and two in the third while AC had one in the first, two in the second, and one in the third for a 4-4 tie. Each team pushed across one runner in the fifth before the Patriots could knock in the game winner.
Adams Central had eight hits in the game but six of them came off the bats of Alyssa Keller and Bess Fiechter as each had three hits. Fiechter had a double and two RBIS while Keller tripled and doubled along with scoring two runs. Lyndsey McDougall and Mary Fox had the other AC hits, both singles.
Knefelkamp, Wherry, and Boyd all had two Heritage hits while Wherry tallied three runs and Blauvelt touched home twice and Boyd had one run.
Heritage beat AC fireballer Sydnee Peterson and she struck out six in taking the loss while walking two and giving up 11 Heritage hits. Knefelkamp fanned seven and walked one.
Adams Central is now 8-3 on the season and 3-1 in the conference loop play.
