The North Adams board of education on Tuesday evening approved a hefty increase in the rates to be paid to substitute bus drivers in the district.
North Adams Business Manager Larry Carty at last month's meeting recommended a 50 percent increase in the pay currently offered to drivers. His recommendation came after illness and personal matters had left the district short of drivers on more than one occasion. The board failed to act on Carty's recommendation at its May meeting and asked him to gather more information.
On Tuesday the board approved the request to boost the pay rate for substitute drivers to $57 per day. Carty said the increase "should provide an incentive to potential substitute drivers who do not consider the current rate sufficient to justify their services."
