Officials of North Adams Schools have established the North Adams School Fund (NASF) within the Adams County Community Foundation to offer assistance and support to needy local students who attend NACS schools.
Wylie Sirk, North Adams school superintendent, said in a news release, "The discussion for the fund began last school year. Since 2008, our community has witnessed a growing concern for families which have experienced serious financial challenges.
"Our schools, as well, have also noted these growing challenges when requests are made for student-centered activities. It is the targeted effort of this fund to provide much-needed assistance and support when families, students, and our schools are unable to afford this support."
JoEllen Eidam, a former member of the North Adams school board and a member of the NASF Committee, said in the news relase, "In this economic downturn, many programs are being reduced or eliminated. Additional support may be needed for students who may not have the parental or financial support that the average student may experience.
"School administrators, teachers, parents, and this community can work collectively to fill this gap."
North Adams Schools administrators received a generous donation for the NASF, according to ACCF Executive Director Coni Mayer, adding that "public and community funds will be pooled, grant applications will be collected two times each year, and funds will be distributed to serve the needs of the North Adams students whose education may be stymied due to lack of support."
